About the Brands

British Gas has been installing boilers in UK homes for more than 50 years. Today the company is owned by the multinational corporation, Centrica, and installs more boilers than any other supplier.

Help-Link started installing boilers in the UK in 1998 and is British Gas’ closest rival. The company started life in a small Yorkshire town with a small team but today the nationwide company installs around 20,000 boilers in the UK every year.

BOXT as a brand is a newcomer to the boiler supply and fit service having only started up in February 2017, but it has been built on decades of experience. The founders of BOXT are former directors of Help-Link and, alongside the former MD of Plumb Center, are offering the UK’s first completely online boiler supply and fit service.

National Coverage

All 3 boiler suppliers offer a national service which means one of their Gas Safe engineers is never too far away from your home. This can mean a quicker service which in an emergency boiler breakdown is invaluable.

However, the number of engineers available does vary. As the more established brand, British Gas have the widest network with over 6,000 engineers across the UK with newcomers BOXT having just 70.

Finance Options

Whether you buy your boiler from British Gas, BOXT or Help-Link, there are a number of payment options available to you. Of course you can choose to pay for the boiler and installation upfront in one lump sum, but you can also spread the cost via monthly finance arrangements.

British Gas, Help-Link and BOXT all offer finance arrangements both with and without deposits. The details of the arrangement you get will differ in terms of the length of the arrangement and the interest rate, so be sure to check what you’re committing to. For example, BOXT currently offer finance arrangements spread over 5 or 10 years while British Gas terms are available over 3, 5, 8 or 10 years. Help-Link give illustrative examples on their website of 3, 5 or 10 years.

BOXT are the only company to offer you an online payment option which means you can pay for your boiler without needing to wait for a visit by an engineer. The price you pay online is fixed quote so you won’t be charged any extras down the road even if the installation is more complex than originally estimated. British Gas and Help-Link also offer fixed price quotes but only after visiting your home to complete a full assessment.

Warranty & Guarantees

Here British Gas lose out to the smaller brands as they only offer a standard warranty with their boilers of 5 years. However, your full heating system is also covered for the first year which is not the case with BOXT or Help-Link. Both BOXT and Help-Link offer a warranty as long as 10 years which gives you great peace of mind for the future.

Awards / Endorsements

You can rest assured that no matter which supplier you choose, your boiler will be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. This means they have been trained to install your boiler safely and professionally so it will perform to its maximum potential and efficiency.

In terms of awards, in 2017 Help-Link received the H&V 2017 Domestic Heating Contractor of the Year. They are also a Which? Trusted Trader.

The newly established BOXT is still building its reputation in the industry but was awarded a Which? Best Buy accreditation in 2017. They also already has an enviable TrustPilot record for customer satisfaction with an “Excellent” 10/10 TrustScore rating.

Fixed Price Quote

Help-Link, British Gas and BOXT all offer fixed price quotes. This means that the you’ll only pay the original price you’re quoted for a boiler installation. Sometimes independent engineers or smaller companies will encounter unforeseen complications during the installation which add to your final bill. With a fixed price quote, no matter what happens down the road, you’ll only pay the original price you agreed to.

The difference here is that BOXT will honour the price they have quoted you online; Help-Link and British Gas may provide an estimate online or over the phone, but it is not fixed until an engineer has visited and assessed your home.

British Gas also provide fixed price repairs and servicing; this could give you great peace of mind in the event something does go wrong with your boiler.

Boiler Brands Available

All 3 boiler suppliers offer at least 3 boiler brands to be able to offer a solution for a range of budgets. In terms of the range of boiler brands to choose from, Help-Link offer you the widest choice of 5: Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Vokera and Ideal. British Gas offer 4 brands while BOXT offer 3.

Each supplier’s range includes brands which are amongst the highest recommended brands by both homeowners and heating engineers including market leaders Worcester Bosch.

Thermostat Included

A smart thermostat is connected to the internet and can be programmed and controlled from an app on a smart device such as your phone or tablet. This means you can monitor and control your heating from wherever you are in the world over an internet connection. Through improved visibility and easier control you can keep a tighter rein on your energy usage, and some can even respond automatically to your geographical location or heating habits.

If you’re looking to install a smart thermostat at the same time as your new boiler then BOXT are a good choice. They are the only supplier of the 3 to offer a free thermostat included in the installation. BOXT offer a Honeywell Smart thermostat which is usually worth £199 (RRP) and is one of the leading brands in the UK.
