Domestic Triple Glazing - Is It Worth It?

Triple Glazed Windows

Greater Efficiency - Greater Cost!

Not as common in the UK as some of our European neighbours is triple glazing that's quite common in places like Scandinavia due to the inherent benefits it has over its double glazed counterparts. As the name suggests rather than just 2 panes of glass a third is introduced to further its ability to insulate the home in extremes of cold and reduce solar gain in summer. As can be seen in the heatmap above the benefits are clearly visible and no one can dispute that triple glazing will always outperform double glazed units.

But Is It Worth It?

The question raised is it really worth the additional cost, which can be anything from 20 - 40% higher than conventional windows, and in the UK do we really get the weather to warrant it? I think not.

It all comes down to the motivation behind it, you couldn't justify the cost based on energy saving alone as the difference between double and triple would be relatively minor, however, it is known that significant reductions in noise can be had from the third pane, installing these units into properties near major roads can increase the value of the home and provide a far nicer environment for the residents.

Suppliers

Triple glazed window suppliers are pretty thin on the ground compared to double glazing and are more often than not fitters of imported units. Here are a couple we've found on our travels:

Rawington, specialise in wood/aluminium windows.

Green Steps, supplier of TanumsFonster triple glazed timber framed windows from Sweden.
